זה החווייה, סטופיד (או למה ווסאבי הפסיד למינט)


קראתי אתמול פוסט מעניין ודי נוגע ללב של בחור בשם מארק הדלאנד. הדלאנד הקים לקראת סוף העשור הקודם יחד עם חבר שלו מהתיכון אתר בשם ווסאבי, שנועד לעזור לאנשים להבין לאן הכסף שלהם הולך ולתת להם כלים לחסוך יותר ממנו. ווסאבי.קום כבר לא קיים היום. הוא הפסיד בנוקאאוט למתחרה שלו, Mint, שעלה לאוויר כמעט שנה אחריו.

בפוסט שלו - שנקרא פשוט Why Wesabe Lost to Mint (אי אפשר להאשים אותו שהוא לא כותב לגוגל) - הדלאנד מנתח את התבוסה שלו בצורה מאוד מפוכחת. הוא מתחיל בפירוט הסיבות שבגללן הוא לא הפסיד. מינט לא עלה קודם, לא היה יותר ויראלי, ולמרות שהוא מסכים שווסאבי זה שם הרבה פחות טוב (בואו נקרא לילד בשמו - מחורבן), אין לזה קשר לתוצאה הסופית.

הסיבה המרכזית, כמו שהדלאנד עצמו מנסח אותה, היא שמינט התמקדו בלתת חוויה נוחה וקלה לגולשים שלהם, ו-ווסאבי לא. פשוט ככה. הייתי מתרגם, אבל זה נשמע יותר טוב באנגלית:
"Mint focused on making the user do almost no work at all, by automatically editing and categorizing their data, reducing the number of fields in their signup form, and giving them immediate gratification as soon as they possibly could; we completely sucked at all of that."
ואת הפיסקה הזאת במיוחד חשוב לתלות על המקרר (הדגשות שלי):
"You'll hear a lot about why company A won and company B lost in any market, and in my experience, a lot of the theories thrown about -- even or especially by the participants -- are utter crap. A domain name doesn't win you a market; launching second or fifth or tenth doesn't lose you a market. You can't blame your competitors or your board or the lack of or excess of investment.  Focus on what really matters: making users happy with your product as quickly as you can, and helping them as much as you can after that.  If you do those better than anyone else out there you'll win."
